Alice Ward is a central character in both versions of Utopia. Befriended by Grant, later entangled in the chase for The Manuscript.

In the Amazon Prime remake, she is only given the name of Alice.

Utopia (UK)[]

Grant, whilst fleeing The Network, breaks into a private school and sits underneath a tree, reading The Manuscript. Alice approaches him, initially polite yet questioning, but Grant responds with hostility, so she responds with mutual curtness. She gives Grant the nickname of "twat" as she reads the manuscript over his shoulder. When she runs to return to her lessons, Grant begs for her not to leave, so she tells him, "Same time tomorrow, twat."

Grant later watches and then breaks into Alice's house as she and her mother eat dinner and do homework. She allows him to sleep on the floor so long as she can read The Manuscript. Before leaving the next morning to find Becky and Wilson, Grant leans in to possibly kiss Alice, but she wakes and he goes to leave. Before he goes, however, he leaves the manuscript with her under the bed, promising to return for it.

When Grant is framed for a school shooting, he becomes the most well-known child in the UK and eyes are turned to Alice who was seen with Grant. Grant admitted to leaving the manuscript with her, so Arby is made to visit her by Conran Letts as Ian is told to visit her by Milner, who believes Jessica Hyde will be there. Arby, posing as a police officer, takes Alice, her mother and a child liasion officer to Alice's house. However, before they arrive, Grant and Jessica remove the manuscript but hide in the bathroom when Arby enters. Alice, unable to find the manuscript, informs Arby it's missing, so he shoots the child liaison officer and then points the gun at Alice's mother. When Grant shouts that he has the manuscript, Jessica refuses to let him give it to Arby, resulting in the death of Alice's mother. Finally, Jessica gives in to Grant and allows Alice and Grant to escape.

Wilson is completely against taking Alice with the group as Alice completely broke down after her mother's death, screaming and sobbing. They keep her, however, and Grant becomes protective of her. During her time at the manor she compulsively breaks down whilst worrying about handing in a school essay.

When the group find Lane Monroe, Alice shoots him after being given a shotgun by Grant, believing him to have killed her mother.

Grant and Alice at Dinner

While fleeing with the manuscript for the comic Utopia, Grant sneaks into the backyard of a home and tries to steal from blackberries. He is caught by Alice, who shouts that he is stealing her blackberries. He tries to scale a fence to escape, but she pulls him back, scattering the Utopia manuscript. They argue over it for a bit, but she eventually takes pity on him and invites him inside for a meal. There, he meets Alice's adoptive mother, Kim, who offers him a place to stay if he needs one. Grant eventually leaves to meet up with his online friends, but leaves part of the Utopia manuscript with Alice for safekeeping.

Later, Alice and her mother are watching television when they see a report about a vaccine for a flu epidemic that has been killing children across the country. Kim says that they have to get her that vaccine, though Alice doesn't like shots. They are then shocked by another report, which claims that Grant is a mass-murderer. Not long after this, government officials descend on the house and begin asking Kim questions about Grant, but suddenly a man named Arby, an assassin of the Harvest arrives at the house and kills them all, and Kim as well. He seems ready to kill Alice as well, but is disturbed by her shouting and crying about his killing her mother. Instead of killing her, he spares her, but makes her tell him where the Utopia manuscript is. He then stays at the house until Grant and Jessica Hyde arrives. Alice watches as he fights Hyde to a standstill, but then gives her the manuscript, warning her that she might not want to read it.

Toughening up[]

Ian and Alice Hiding

Ian Johnson and Alice hiding in the brush

They all return to a safe house, where Hyde leaves Alice in the care of Becky. Not good with children herself, Hyde tells Becky "Comfort her. She just lost her mother." Later, they travel to another safe house, based on Hyde's opinion that it's always best to keep moving. Alice cries, saying that she doesn't want to stay there, that she just wants to go and wants her mother back. Hyde tells her it's not how it works and when she tries to flee, she grabs her by the braid, then handcuffs her to a bed. Later, Alice asks Grant to get some scissors and then to cut off her braid. She tells Grant that his way, Jessica Hyde will never have her by the braid again.

Discovering a clue, the group travels to the home of the scientist Dr. Michael Stearns, the inventor of the vaccine for the flu, thinking that he might be the villainous Mr. Rabbit. There, Stearns reveals that his wife, Colleen, has just told him that she's a secret agent. Jessica Hyde quickly verifies the truth of this and the two begin an intense fight which seemingly ends when Colleen manages to subdue Hyde behind a counter. Then, to everyone's surprise, Alice grabs a gun and shoots Colleen in the chest. Jessica Hyde rises and nods at Alice with new respect.

Later, Ian tries to console Alice while Jessica Hyde is busy torturing Michael Stearns. He tells her that everyone gets sad sometimes and when he feels that way, it helps him to do something silly. Grant joins the two and they turn up some music and jump on the bed to drown out the sound of Stearns's screams.

Arby, now going by "John," delivers a duct-taped Kevin Christie to the group. Alice discovers a virus formed from a pattern of the edges of a pages of Utopia and the group demands to know what it is. Christie reveals that it is the Undoing, and that the true purpose of the supposed flu vaccine is to sterilize people, ending the problem of overpopulation. Alice then joins the group when they raid Christie Labs, driving a cart alongside Grant and causing destruction en masse. The group then runs away into the countryside, but get split up when Becky and Grant want to keep running, but Alice and Ian want to stop for a rest. Becky and Grant are caught out in the open by police forces, while Alice and Ian manage to hide. Ian races, trying to help Becky, but Alice pulls him back, warning him there's no way they can save them if they get caught too.
